AWS Cuts Hundreds of Jobs Amid Record Crypto Thefts in 2025

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, has announced significant layoffs, cutting hundreds of positions despite reporting increased revenues and positive operating results.

According to reports, the job reductions occurred just a month after Amazon's CEO, Andrew Jassy, highlighted the potential impact of generative AI tools on job security within the company. While Amazon has confirmed the layoffs, it has not disclosed specific numbers, although sources indicate that the cuts involve at least several hundred positions. This decision comes despite AWS experiencing a 17% year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter, amounting to $29.3 billion, alongside a 23% increase in operating income.

In the realm of cryptocurrency, 2025 is witnessing a surge in cybercrime, with losses from crypto thefts already exceeding those of the entire previous year. Hackers recently targeted the cryptocurrency exchange BigONE, stealing digital assets worth approximately $27 million, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Fortunately, the exchange has committed to covering these losses for affected customers, assuring them that no personal keys or user data were compromised. If the current trend continues, total cryptocurrency thefts for 2025 could surpass $4 billion, according to market analysts.

In a related development, Uber is making significant investments in the autonomous vehicle sector, committing hundreds of millions of dollars to Lucid Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer, and Nuro, a robotics company. The ride-hailing giant plans to deploy at least 20,000 Lucid SUVs equipped with Nuro's autonomous driving technology within six years, marking a substantial push into the robotaxi market.

Meanwhile, the food delivery service Lieferando is set to lay off approximately 2,000 drivers across Germany, representing about 20% of its workforce. This move is part of a strategy to enhance collaboration with subcontractors for last-mile deliveries, particularly in smaller cities. Negotiations regarding a social plan for affected employees are expected to commence shortly.

Additionally, consumer protection concerns have been raised regarding verbal agreements made during customer retention calls. There is growing uncertainty over the enforceability of such agreements, as disputes often result in conflicting accounts between consumers and businesses. It is advised that customers carefully review written summaries of any verbal commitments and consider recording such conversations to safeguard their rights.
