Apple's Future Smartphone Plans: iPhone 17, 18, and 19 Insights

Mon 5th May, 2025

Recent reports indicate that Apple is strategizing significant changes to its iPhone lineup over the next few years. According to a publication based in Silicon Valley, the company is expected to adjust its marketing strategies and release schedules for its standard and Pro models. Notably, Apple is anticipated to bypass the introduction of an 'iPhone 17e' model.

One of the highlights of Apple's roadmap is a special model commemorating the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, slated for release in 2027. This device is rumored to feature an innovative 'All Screen Design,' eliminating the need for notches or camera holes.

Staggering Releases for Standard and Pro Models

For the current year, Apple plans to launch all four iPhone 17 variants in the fall. However, starting in 2026, the company is expected to stagger the release dates. Pro models are likely to debut in the fall, alongside a new foldable device with a compact 5.7-inch screen when closed and an expanded 8-inch display when opened. In contrast, the standard iPhone 18 is projected for a spring release. Additionally, a revised version of the iPhone 16e may also hit the market, renamed as the 18e, while the iPhone 17e is reportedly off the table.

This strategic shift is aimed at better managing the iPhone lineup, enhancing development, production, and logistical aspects. The forthcoming years will see a total of four models released in the fall of 2026 and two in the spring of 2027. These are expected to include the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, 18 Air, and the foldable model in September, followed by the iPhone 18 and 18e in early 2027.

Independence from China and New Production Strategies

In line with these changes, Apple is also focusing on reducing its reliance on Chinese manufacturing. All lower-cost iPhones are anticipated to be produced in India, alongside necessary trial runs, a shift from the previous practice of conducting these in China.

Innovative Hardware Developments in Upcoming iPhones

In terms of hardware, Apple is reportedly on the verge of introducing under-display Face ID technology in its devices by 2026. This long-awaited feature has been in development for several years, with the company previously expressing dissatisfaction with its progress. For the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, a 'pinhole' camera is still expected to be positioned at the top left for selfies, while the iPhone 19 Pro and Pro Max might incorporate a camera completely beneath the display. The implications of this technology on image quality remain to be seen, as does the future of the Dynamic Island feature.

Additionally, Apple is planning to offer a dedicated battery case for the iPhone 17 Air, responding to concerns about battery life due to the device's slimmer design. Internal assessments suggest that approximately 60-70% of typical users may find the battery insufficient for a full day's use, compared to the 80-90% range typical of other iPhone models. The production capacity for the iPhone 17 Air is projected to represent about ten percent of Apple's overall output, though details regarding the dimensions of the battery case are still unspecified.
