Apple Plans Price Increase for iPhone 17 Amidst Trade Challenges

Tue 13th May, 2025

Apple is reportedly preparing for a significant price hike for its upcoming iPhone 17 models, scheduled for release in the fall. According to insights from industry sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, the company aims to justify the increase not solely based on the ongoing trade tensions with China but also by highlighting new features and design changes that are intended to enhance profit margins.

At present, Apple incurs a 20% tariff on iPhones imported from China to the United States, a fee resulting from the Fentanyl Tariff introduced during the Trump administration. Although initial tariffs were as high as 145%, a temporary suspension for electronics was implemented for 90 days, leading to a reduction in rates. Following a tentative agreement between the U.S. and China, it is expected that these tariffs will decrease to 10%, although Apple has already set aside an additional $900 million for the current quarter to account for existing tariffs.

Historically, Apple has not raised prices for its devices in the U.S. despite these trade challenges. The company is also making efforts to shift more of its iPhone production to India, though this transition is likely to take years, and it remains uncertain whether tariffs will be less stringent in India, now the most populous nation globally. Moreover, producing all variants of the iPhone, particularly the Pro and Pro Max models, in India poses significant challenges due to current manufacturing capabilities.

The core production of iPhones is expected to remain in China, as India is still developing its ability to match the necessary scale of production. Additionally, pressures on suppliers to reduce prices may be ineffective, given that they too are impacted by import tariffs. If Apple proceeds with a price increase, it might not be limited to the U.S. market but could also extend to global markets, including Europe.

As for the possible extent of the price increase, it remains unclear. The new 'iPhone 17 Air,' which is expected to be notably thinner, may command a higher price point due to its design. Currently, the iPhone 16 is priced at approximately $800 in the U.S., while the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,200. The iPhone 16 Plus is available for around $900, excluding sales tax.
