Apple Enhances Password App Support for Windows Users

Apple has expanded the functionality of its Passwords app, allowing users to access their credentials on Windows PCs through iCloud. This update brings much-needed support for all major Windows browsers, enhancing user convenience.

Recent reports from users on Reddit indicate that Apple has successfully launched a Firefox extension for its Passwords app on Windows. However, it appears that this functionality is only available under specific configurations.

Initially introduced in September of the previous year alongside iOS 18, macOS 15, and iPadOS 18, the Passwords app facilitates synchronization through iCloud. In a bid to make password management more accessible on Windows, Apple integrated password capabilities into the official iCloud app for PC and released extensions for various browsers.

Initially, these extensions were limited to Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. A few months later, an official Firefox extension became available, but it faced functionality issues until this week. Reports suggest that while Apple released the Firefox extension, it lacked essential features in the iCloud for Windows application, which have now been addressed in a recent update. Users will manage their passwords through the iCloud application rather than directly within the browser, indicating that a fully browser-based password management solution akin to competitors like 1Password is not on Apple's agenda.

However, users operating on Windows 10 may encounter challenges as the Firefox extension for the Passwords app seems to work only with Windows 11. Currently, options for Firefox do not appear for users on the outdated Windows 10 platform, and Apple has not clarified whether this will change.

The importance of Apple's Passwords app has grown significantly in recent years, particularly due to its support for passkeys. This biometric authentication method has been challenging to export, leaving users reliant on the password application once they start using it. Nonetheless, Apple has announced plans to make passkeys exportable in the near future. Starting this fall, users will have the ability to transfer passkeys stored in the iCloud Keychain or the Passwords app to other password management solutions. Additionally, Apple will support the exporting of passwords and one-time codes, as well as their import into other applications.
