Apple Enhances AirPods with New Firmware in iOS 26

Tue 10th Jun, 2025

Apple is set to enhance its AirPods lineup with a significant firmware update as part of the upcoming iOS 26 release. This update promises to introduce a range of new features aimed at improving the user experience for both new and existing AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 users.

Among the key improvements is an upgraded audio quality for calls, including those made via FaceTime and third-party applications like Zoom that utilize Apple's CallKit API. Users can expect clearer sound and more natural voice textures, making conversations feel more lifelike. In addition to better call quality, the update will also enhance microphone performance, enabling studio-quality audio recordings suitable for various applications such as interviews, podcasts, and music production.

To achieve these advancements, Apple is reportedly incorporating advanced AI algorithms, although the specifics of their implementation remain to be seen. The new features will support devices running the latest versions of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26, which are all expected to launch in the fall.

Another exciting addition is an automatic pause feature designed for users who listen while sleeping. The AirPods will now be able to detect when the user is no longer listening, automatically pausing audio playback. Furthermore, users can now remotely trigger their device's camera; with AirPods in place, a simple gesture--such as a longer press on the earbuds--will allow users to take photos or videos. This functionality is expected to extend to third-party applications, giving users the flexibility to synchronize recordings with music, ideal for creating dance videos on platforms like TikTok.

For those who use CarPlay, the update introduces an audio handover feature. If a user is listening to music through their AirPods and then gets into a car, the audio will automatically switch to CarPlay if the user opts for this setting. Additionally, users will be able to maintain audio playback in their AirPods even when their iPhone connects to other devices, such as speakers or CarPlay.

Importantly, Apple will finally allow users to manually initiate firmware updates for their AirPods, a feature that many have long requested. Previously, users had to rely on various unofficial methods to force updates. This change will streamline the process, ensuring that users can quickly access the latest enhancements.

The new AirPods firmware is anticipated to launch alongside iOS 26 in the fall. Developers are currently able to test a beta version of the firmware, although this requires their AirPods to communicate with devices that are also running the beta. A public beta is expected to be available starting in July.
