Apple Discontinues AirPort Support: Future Router Developments Speculated

Mon 14th Jul, 2025

Apple has recently announced the removal of support for several models in its AirPort line of wireless routers, marking a significant update to its list of obsolete products. The affected models include the second generation of the compact AirPort Express, along with the 2TB and 3TB versions of the AirPort Time Capsule, and the AirPort Extreme router with 802.11ac technology.

The designation of 'obsolete' indicates that Apple will no longer provide any support for these devices, including paid services. Neither Apple itself nor its Authorized Service Providers (ASPs) will stock or order replacement parts nor offer repair services. This decision leaves users of these devices without options for maintenance, with the exception of certain MacBook models that still allow for battery replacements.

Interestingly, the first-generation AirPort Express with 802.11n remains classified as 'vintage' for now, meaning it is still eligible for service if parts are available, although the rationale behind this distinction has not been clarified. All of the recently discontinued AirPort products were removed from the market by Apple in the spring of 2018, but they have continued to see brisk sales on second-hand markets due to their reputable durability and performance.

However, the use of AirPort products is increasingly discouraged due to significant security vulnerabilities that remain unaddressed. Research has revealed that devices can be fully compromised via the AirPlay protocol, raising concerns among users who have called on Apple to rectify these issues. Meanwhile, the company has successfully patched vulnerabilities on its more recent devices, including the iPhone.

Amidst these developments, speculation continues regarding Apple's potential plans for new wireless devices. Industry insiders have long suggested that Apple may be venturing into the router market again or integrating router capabilities into new offerings like the anticipated 'Home Hub.' Reports indicate that the company is developing a new combination chip that would merge Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functionality, potentially allowing for use as an access point. However, it remains uncertain whether Apple will reintroduce fully functional routers akin to the AirPort models.
