Apple Enhances CarPlay with New Widgets and Expanded Car Key Functionality

Tue 10th Jun, 2025

Apple has unveiled a series of updates for its CarPlay integration alongside the launch of its latest operating systems, including iOS 26, macOS 26, and tvOS 26. These enhancements aim to improve user experience in vehicles equipped with CarPlay, introducing a fresh new design and various functional improvements.

One of the key features is the introduction of customizable widgets that can be placed on the CarPlay home screen. Users can now access elements from applications such as HomeKit and Calendar directly from their vehicle's interface, enhancing accessibility. Furthermore, developers are given the opportunity to create their own widgets, allowing for even more personalized experiences.

In addition to the widgets, the messaging application has received updates, including the addition of Tapbacks for quick responses. Live activities can now also be displayed on the CarPlay screen, ensuring that users stay informed while on the road. The new user interface is designed to integrate phone calls and incoming messages seamlessly, ensuring that the view remains unobstructed during use.

Despite these enhancements, Apple has yet to incorporate a web browser into CarPlay, maintaining its policy against allowing browsing or video playback while driving. This restriction persists regardless of whether the vehicle is stationary, as Apple continues to prioritize safety in its design philosophy. The updated interface will also be available on CarPlay Ultra, although this deeper integration has not yet rolled out in Europe.

Additionally, Apple plans to expand its Car Key functionality, which enables users to unlock their vehicles using their iPhone or Apple Watch. The company is set to partner with more automotive manufacturers, enhancing compatibility with brands like Porsche, Smart, Acura, Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Rivian, Lucid Motors, Tata Motors, Hongqi, WEY, Chery, and Voyah, in addition to existing partners such as Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Hyundai, and Kia. Specific vehicle models that will support this feature have not yet been disclosed.

The Car Key function utilizes Bluetooth and NFC technology and is compatible with devices starting from the iPhone XS and the Apple Watch Series 5 or newer models. The digital keys will be stored within the Apple Wallet app, making access straightforward for users. Furthermore, Apple's Home Key feature for smart locks is also available, though it has yet to see widespread use in Europe.
