Antisemitic Violence in Berlin: 67 Incidents Reported in 2024

Wed 12th Mar, 2025

In 2024, the Berlin police documented 67 incidents of violence motivated by antisemitism, highlighting a troubling trend that has emerged in the city. A significant portion of these incidents occurred during demonstrations, particularly related to pro-Palestinian sentiments. This data was revealed in response to an inquiry from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), although the official statistics for 2024 have yet to be published.

Among the reported cases, 26 were categorized as bodily harm, while 19 incidents involved resistance against law enforcement officers, with an additional 19 classified as breaches of the peace, most often occurring at pro-Palestinian protests. The spike in antisemitic violence follows the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent outbreak of conflict in Gaza, which appears to have fueled tensions and escalated violent incidents.

The police have identified a large number of the alleged perpetrators as belonging to groups motivated by foreign and religious ideologies, including anti-Israel and Islamist factions. Additionally, seven cases were attributed to right-wing extremists, while six incidents were linked to left-wing extremist groups.

In terms of broader trends, the police also recorded eight instances of Islamophobic violence in the past year, down from 22 in 2023, with all suspected assailants connected to the far-right spectrum of extremism.

The rise in hate crimes, including those motivated by sexual identity or orientation, has been noted as well. In 2024, there were 104 reported incidents of violence against the LGBTQ+ community, which is slightly lower than the 151 and 165 recorded in the previous two years. However, the identification of suspects in these cases remains vague, lacking concrete classifications regarding their affiliations.

As authorities continue to grapple with rising societal tensions, the need for effective measures to combat hate-fueled violence has become increasingly urgent. This report serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining public safety and fostering a climate of tolerance and respect within diverse communities.
