Amazon Acquires Wearable Technology Startup Bee

Wed 23rd Jul, 2025

Amazon has announced its intention to acquire the startup Bee, a company known for developing a wearable device equipped with a personal AI assistant. This information was confirmed by various US media outlets after the CEO of Bee shared the news on LinkedIn.

Bee specializes in producing a wrist-worn gadget that resembles a typical fitness tracker but offers advanced capabilities. The device is embedded with microphones that can continuously listen to conversations, allowing it to create a personalized AI assistant. Through the Bee app, users can access daily summaries and transcriptions of their discussions.

The wearable is priced at $50 and is currently available only in the United States, although it is designed to support up to 40 different languages. Users concerned about privacy can deactivate the microphones at any time, though this action will disable the device's primary features.

It remains uncertain whether Amazon aims to enhance the development of Bee's AI wristband or if the acquisition primarily focuses on the expertise of its employees. A spokesperson for the company indicated that all staff members from the startup would be given the opportunity to join Amazon.

Amazon's progress in rolling out a new generation of AI for its Alexa voice assistant has been slow. The anticipated upgrade, known as Alexa+, has faced multiple delays, with various media reports highlighting challenges during its development. The service, which is expected to be a paid upgrade to the existing Alexa assistant, has yet to be made available in Germany and is currently in a limited access phase in the United States. It remains to be seen whether future iterations of Alexa will integrate into wearable devices like wristbands.
