Major Investments Planned for Allgäu Rail Infrastructure from 2026--Commuters Face Longer Journeys

Tue 9th Dec, 2025

Significant enhancements are scheduled for the Allgäu region's railway infrastructure, with substantial investments set to commence in 2026. While these upgrades promise long-term benefits, travelers in the area should prepare for extended travel times and temporary route adjustments during the construction period.

At a recent high-level conference in Kaufbeuren, key representatives from the German rail sector and government convened to outline the strategy for rail modernization in Swabia. The chief of German railway infrastructure presented an extensive plan, emphasizing the importance of reliability throughout the overhaul. Regional and federal officials in attendance underscored their commitment to ensuring that the projects are implemented efficiently and with minimal disruption.

The planned investment in the rail network for 2026 stands at 26 billion euros, nearly double the amount allocated for road construction projects. This financial commitment is expected to drive major improvements in station accessibility and overall network efficiency. However, authorities stressed that the success of these efforts depends not only on funding but also on effective planning and execution.

One critical concern raised during the discussion was the prolonged approval process for rail infrastructure projects. Current regulatory procedures can take several years, prompting calls for legislative reforms to streamline the process, especially for bridge and level crossing renovations.

Among the key upgrades, the Allgäu region will see numerous stations and crossings made barrier-free, including the Kaufbeuren station and several stops along the Ulm-Oberstdorf route. Electrification of this corridor has been approved, with initial contracts due to be signed in the coming months. The modernization will incorporate overhead lines and battery-powered tilting trains, which will enable high-speed intercity trains to reach destinations like Oberstdorf. The ultimate goal is to replace all diesel locomotives in the Allgäu by 2040, significantly reducing the region's environmental footprint.

Immediate priorities also involve the repair of slow-speed sections between Buchloe and Munich. To maintain service reliability during these works, train schedules will be adjusted to reflect actual travel conditions. The repair project is expected to run from early February through the end of October 2026.

During this period, rail passengers will experience notable changes. Direct connections from Füssen to central Munich will be temporarily suspended, with trains terminating at Munich-Pasing. Regional services from Buchloe to Munich will also end at Pasing, requiring commuters to make additional transfers. Travelers from Kempten and Memmingen should anticipate journey times increased by approximately 20 minutes, while the infrequent long-distance services will be extended by about 10 minutes.

Despite these temporary inconveniences, officials have assured that the revised timetables will be adhered to as strictly as regular schedules, ensuring commuters can plan their journeys with confidence during the construction phase. Upon completion, the region's railway infrastructure is expected to offer greater reliability, improved accessibility, and environmentally sustainable operations.
