The future of Berlin's Repair Bonus program, which promotes the sustainable repair of electronic devices, is currently uncertain. The Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) has expressed strong opposition to the potential discontinuation of this initiative, citing its success in encouraging environmentally friendly behavior.
Launched in September 2024, the Repair Bonus was designed to support the sustainable use of electronic devices, reduce waste, and conserve resources. The program provided financial assistance for repairs of various electronic items, including smartphones, laptops, and household appliances, covering up to 50% of repair costs, with a maximum payout of 200 euros. For repairs conducted at community repair cafes or similar organizations, the program subsidized 100% of the parts costs.
Since its inception, the program has garnered significant interest from the public, with more than 14,000 repairs funded by the initiative as of mid-2025. However, as of now, the program's continuation is in jeopardy due to a lack of available funding. A representative from the Senate Department for the Environment indicated that without secured financial resources, the program cannot proceed. A definitive decision regarding the program's future will only be made following the conclusion of the upcoming budget discussions.
The BUND has emphasized the program's importance, arguing that it provides a crucial incentive for individuals to consider repairing their devices rather than opting for immediate replacements. This not only benefits consumers but also supports local repair businesses, creating a beneficial cycle for both the environment and the economy.
The Berlin Senate had initially allocated 1.25 million euros annually for the Repair Bonus, responding to the high demand for repairs. However, as of June 2025, the funding for the current year has been depleted, halting the acceptance of new applications.
The Senate's proposed budget for 2026/2027 was approved on July 22, and discussions regarding the budget are set to take place after the summer recess. Final approval of the budget is expected in December, which will determine the fate of the Repair Bonus program.
