New iPad Air and MacBook Air Models Expected Amid Supply Shortages

Mon 10th Feb, 2025

Recent reports indicate that Apple may soon announce new versions of the iPad Air and MacBook Air, alongside the anticipated launch of the iPhone SE 4. This speculation arises from a noticeable decline in availability for current models, suggesting a potential refresh is on the horizon.

Insider sources, including renowned journalist Mark Gurman, have pointed out a reduction in stock for the existing iPad Air M2 and MacBook Air M3. According to Gurman, Apple is likely to release an upgraded MacBook Air featuring the M4 chip, as well as new entry-level iPads and updated iPad Air models in the first half of 2025.

Checking the Apple Online Store reveals that the iPad Air M2 is experiencing longer wait times for delivery, with estimates now at eight to nine days, in contrast to the usual immediate availability. Additionally, certain configurations of the MacBook Air M3 are also facing delays, with some models only accessible after ten days, which is unusual for devices that should be readily available at this stage of their product cycle. The MacBook Air M3 was introduced in March 2024, while the iPad Air M2 launched in May 2024.

Details about the specifications of these forthcoming models remain unclear. The MacBook Air is expected to simply transition from the M3 to the M4 chip without any significant changes to its design. For the iPad Air, Apple might choose to upgrade directly to the M4 chip, or alternatively, it could opt to use the M3 chip in the new model. Such a decision could prompt Apple to upgrade the iPad Pro to the M5 chip in order to maintain a competitive edge, but this upgrade might take several months.

The standard iPad of the 11th generation is also anticipated to receive an A17 chip, which is essential for Apple's future technologies, along with a minimum of 8 GB of RAM. This device could be unveiled concurrently with the new Air models, although the exact release date remains uncertain. Unlike previous launches, there is reportedly no keynote event planned for the iPhone SE 4; instead, it may be introduced through a press release on Apple's website.
