Traffic Accidents in Schwerin Involve Cars and Trams

Wed 23rd Jul, 2025

Schwerin - On Tuesday evening, two separate incidents occurred in the city center of Schwerin involving cars colliding with trams. The first accident took place at 7:40 PM in the Altstadt area, where an 83-year-old driver of a Peugeot failed to yield while turning from Geschwister-Scholl-Straße onto Goethestraße. Despite the tram having the right of way, the driver did not notice it in time. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, though the damage to the vehicles was estimated at approximately EUR4,000.

The second incident occurred later at 10:10 PM on Lübecker Straße. An Audi A8 was traveling alongside a tram towards Platz der Freiheit when the road was narrowed due to construction work. Despite clear signage indicating that the tram had the right of way, the 23-year-old Audi driver misjudged the situation and attempted to cut in front of the tram. A collision was unavoidable, even with an emergency brake applied by the tram driver, aged 55. Similar to the earlier incident, there were no injuries, but the estimated damage for this accident was around EUR6,000.

Both incidents highlight the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and being aware of the right-of-way rules, especially in areas where tram lines intersect with road traffic. Authorities continue to stress the need for caution and attentiveness among drivers, particularly in busy urban environments.
