In the eastern and northeastern regions of Germany, forecasts predicted severe storms, but the night passed with relatively little disruption, according to authorities. Reports indicate that while Mecklenburg-Vorpommern experienced heavy rainfall, no significant incidents or damages were reported by the police.
Berlin, Brandenburg, and Saxony also reported a quiet night without major events. The fire department in Rostock confirmed that, as of 4:00 AM, there had been no emergency calls related to the weather.
However, in Giebelstadt, Bavaria, a thunderstorm on Monday evening resulted in a lightning strike at the Catholic St. Nicholas Chapel, igniting a fire in the tower. Although firefighters were able to control the blaze quickly, the tower has been deemed structurally unsafe, according to police reports.
The German Weather Service (DWD) had issued the highest level of weather warnings on Monday afternoon for areas between Rostock and Stralsund, including parts of the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, due to anticipated heavy or prolonged rainfall. Warnings for similar weather conditions were also in effect for parts of Brandenburg, Berlin, and Saxony.
By early Tuesday morning, a DWD spokesperson stated that precise rainfall totals from the night were not yet available but suggested that the actual precipitation might have been less severe than initially forecasted.
In Berlin and Brandenburg, the rain did not lead to significant problems during the evening. As a precaution, open-air concerts featuring Robbie Williams and opera singer Anna Netrebko were canceled due to the inclement weather. Similarly, no major incidents were reported in Saxony.
Despite the calm in the previous night, conditions in the eastern and northeastern regions are expected to remain wet. The DWD forecasts localized showers and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day, with additional rain expected to move in from the west. In contrast, areas south of the Danube are likely to experience longer periods of sunshine. Maximum temperatures across the country are projected to range between 19 and 26 degrees Celsius.
