Tessin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - A serious accident occurred on the A20 when a 66-year-old BMW driver lost control of his vehicle during heavy rainfall. The car overturned and ended up in a rainwater retention basin, where the driver was later found deceased.
At 9:07 AM on Wednesday, the vehicle's automatic emergency call system was activated, alerting emergency services. Upon arrival, first responders were confronted with a chaotic scene: car debris was scattered over a wide area, and the site resembled a disaster zone.
The police reported that the BMW veered off to the right, crashing through a guardrail and a slope before breaching several wildlife protection fences. Approximately 100 to 150 meters later, the vehicle came to rest in the retention basin.
In the water, only the roof of the BMW was visible. Due to the challenging conditions, emergency personnel were unable to extract the vehicle without assistance. A local farmer utilized his tractor to help pull the car from the water. Unfortunately, upon retrieval, the driver, a resident of Hamburg, was discovered still buckled in his seat and was presumed to have drowned.
As the vehicle belonged to a transport service and a child seat was located inside, search efforts intensified in the surrounding areas for any additional victims. Firefighters, police, and disaster response teams combed through nearby fields, even employing thermal imaging drones to aid in the search. The basin was drained, but after several hours, it was confirmed that no other individuals were involved in the incident.
The extensive operation continued until the afternoon, and preliminary investigations suggest that no third-party negligence was involved. Authorities indicated that the incident appears to be an unfortunate single-vehicle accident. While the cause remains under investigation, initial assessments indicate that the driver may have been traveling too quickly for the road conditions during the rain.
