Commemoration of 80th Anniversary of Liberation at Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück

Sun 4th May, 2025

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of thousands of individuals from the Nazi concentration camps in Brandenburg. Memorial events are scheduled to take place at the Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück memorial sites, reflecting on this significant historical moment.

This morning, at 10:00 AM, Claudia Roth, the Minister of State for Culture from the Green Party, will deliver a greeting at the former women's camp in Ravensbrück. Her address will be complemented by readings of recollections from former detainees, providing a poignant reminder of the past. Additionally, Tobias Dünow, the Secretary of State for Science, Research, and Culture in Brandenburg, will also attend the event.

Later in the day, at 2:00 PM, a central commemorative gathering will be held at the Sachsenhausen memorial. Key political figures are expected to participate, including Dietmar Woidke, the Minister-President of Brandenburg from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), and Kai Wegner, the Governing Mayor of Berlin from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). These events serve not only as a remembrance of those who suffered but also as a reaffirmation of the commitment to uphold the values of tolerance and human rights.

The commemoration aims to honor the memories of the victims and ensure that the lessons learned from this dark chapter in history continue to resonate in contemporary society. The participation of high-ranking officials underscores the importance of remembering the atrocities of the past as a means to prevent their recurrence in the future.

As we gather to reflect on these events, it is crucial to recognize the ongoing impact of historical injustices and the importance of collective memory in shaping a more inclusive and humane society.
