YouTube Settles with Trump Over Account Suspension for $24.5 Million

Tue 30th Sep, 2025

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a legal dispute regarding the suspension of Donald Trump's account following the storming of the U.S. Capitol. This agreement was revealed in a filing submitted to the relevant court, which detailed that Trump would receive $22 million of the total sum, while an additional $2.5 million would be distributed to other plaintiffs involved in the case.

The agreement comes in the wake of similar settlements reached by other social media platforms, including Meta and X, which also faced legal challenges related to the suspension of Trump's accounts. Reports indicate that Alphabet, YouTube's parent company, aimed to minimize its payout, achieving a settlement that is slightly less than what Meta had agreed to.

Trump's YouTube account was initially suspended in January 2021, shortly after the Capitol riots, when a mob, incited by Trump, attempted to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's electoral victory. The platform first imposed a temporary suspension, which was later made permanent. It wasn't until two years later that Trump was allowed to resume posting videos. Initially, his account boasted approximately 2.77 million subscribers, a number that has now grown to nearly four million, although no new content has been uploaded since the beginning of the year.

Despite the settlement, YouTube has not admitted to any wrongdoing, as stated in the legal documents. The decision to settle was primarily motivated by a desire to avoid further litigation costs and associated risks. Earlier this year, X, a service linked to Trump ally Elon Musk, settled its dispute over account suspension for $10 million, while Meta's settlement was reported at $25 million.

The legality of Trump's account suspension by YouTube remains unchallenged in court. In 2022, Trump faced a legal setback against Twitter on similar grounds. The funds from YouTube's settlement are expected to be utilized for the construction of a large ballroom adjacent to the White House.
