YouTube Implements Stricter Controls on Family Subscriptions

YouTube is reportedly intensifying its scrutiny of family subscription plans to ensure that users genuinely reside in the same household. In cases of uncertainty, the platform is sending emails warning of potential suspension of premium services unless users clarify their living arrangements. Experiences shared on platforms like Reddit highlight this increasing vigilance.

The cost of YouTube Premium Family in Germany is currently set at EUR23.99 per month, allowing users to enjoy YouTube and YouTube Music ad-free. Subscribers can also download videos and music for offline playback and use the app in the background. To qualify, family members must be at least 13 years old, possess a Google account, and live with the family group administrator.

Historically, YouTube has not closely monitored whether all users are genuinely part of the same household. For instance, children who moved out often retained access to family memberships instead of subscribing individually. Additionally, some groups have exploited family subscriptions as a cost-saving measure, dividing the monthly fee among several users, thus reducing the individual cost significantly.

This recent enforcement appears to target those practices. YouTube had previously ramped up its oversight regarding international membership usage, canceling subscriptions that violated terms. Users from Europe have been known to take advantage of cheaper subscription rates in countries like Argentina by signing up there.

According to a recent email shared by a user on the tech blog Androidpolice, individuals who allegedly breached the family plan terms may see their memberships paused after 14 days. While they would remain part of the family group, they would no longer enjoy premium features and would be subject to advertisements once more.
