Restoration of Wuhlheide Bridge Restores Tram Services

Thu 29th May, 2025

Public transport services in Berlin have taken a positive turn as the tram line at the Wuhlheide Bridge has been reopened for operations. This vital connection between Köpenick and the rest of the city was temporarily suspended due to safety concerns regarding the structural integrity of the bridge.

As of early this morning, tram services resumed, with the first trams departing shortly after 5:00 AM. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) announced the reinstatement of service, which will initially feature a shuttle service on line M17. This shuttle will operate every 10 minutes, connecting passengers between Blockdammweg and the S-Bahn station at Schöneweide.

While the tram line reopens, alternative transit routes will remain in effect for other tram lines in the area until further notice. The previous bus replacement services will be discontinued, signaling a return to normalcy for tram users.

Starting this Saturday, all tram lines in the vicinity will operate according to their regular schedules. The interim period is crucial to allow for the adjustment of all information systems, as well as service and travel timetables, ensuring a consistent and reliable operation moving forward.

In addition to the resumption of tram services, pedestrian and cyclist access is set to reopen from Treskowallee to Edisonstraße. However, due to the absence of traffic lights at this intersection, the movement of trams and non-motorized traffic will be monitored by safety personnel to ensure order and safety.

The closure of the tram line was prompted by safety assessments of the Wuhlheide Bridge, which had been deemed at risk of collapse. Authorities have prioritized thorough inspections and necessary repairs to restore the structure's safety and functionality, enabling the tram services to resume.
