Declining Support for Union: New Poll Shows CDU at 26% as AfD Approaches 23%

Sun 30th Mar, 2025

The political landscape in Germany is shifting, as a recent survey indicates that the Union (CDU/CSU) has experienced a drop in public support, now standing at 26%. This decline marks a decrease of 2.5 percentage points since the last federal election and a one-point drop from the previous week, according to the latest Insa poll conducted for a Sunday publication.

In contrast, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), a potential coalition partner, has gained ground, increasing its support by one percentage point to reach 16%. This polling data suggests that a Schwarz-Rot (black-red) coalition, consisting of the Union and SPD, would not hold a majority in the Bundestag.

Following closely behind is the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which maintained its position with a steady 23%. This figure indicates a growing proximity to the CDU, reflecting a significant shift in voter preferences. The Greens remained stable at 12%, while the Left Party saw a slight increase to 10%. The Free Democratic Party (FDP), however, is struggling, with only 3%, which would not secure them a seat in the parliament. Other parties collectively garnered around 5% of the vote.

The polling, which surveyed 1,204 individuals from March 24 to March 28, 2025, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points. As the political dynamics evolve, analysts are closely observing the implications these shifts may have on upcoming elections and coalition formations.

The results reflect a complex political environment where traditional parties are facing challenges from emerging alternatives, highlighting the shifting sentiments of the electorate.
