Offene Wunde

Münchner Volkstheater

Offene Wunde is a documentary theater piece about the attack at the Olympia Einkaufszentrum (OEZ) by Tunay Önder and Christine Umpfenbach. On July 22, 2016, a perpetrator motivated by racism killed nine young people from Munich: Armela, Can, Dijamant, Guiliano, Hüseyin, Roberto, Sabine, Selçuk, and Sevda, before taking his own life. Most of the victims were born and raised in Munich. Seven of them were Muslims, one was Roma, and another was Sinto. Initially, the investigative authorities and the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the incident not as a politically motivated attack but as a rampage, despite the known far-right ideology of the perpetrator. It was only three years later that the Bavarian security agencies adopted the Federal Justice Office's assessment, categorizing the attack as a far-right act, largely due to the persistence of the victims' families.

Tunay Önder and Christine Umpfenbach developed this theater evening based on conversations with the relatives of the victims, telling the stories of the lives of both the victims and their families. Through discussions with lawyers, politicians, and individuals from security agencies, Önder and Umpfenbach illuminate the societal environment in which racism flourishes and often leads to deadly outcomes. "Offene Wunde" serves as a reminder of the murdered individuals, ensuring they continue to live on as long as we do not forget them.

With kind support from the families, the initiative "München Erinnern!", the Cultural Department, and the Democracy Center.
