Union Regains Slight Lead Over AfD in Recent Polls

Sun 13th Apr, 2025

In a recent political survey, the Union has regained a narrow lead over the Alternative for Germany (AfD), marking a significant development in the current political landscape. The Union, represented by its expected next Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has increased its support to 25%, while the AfD remains at 24%. This shift comes after both parties had previously been tied at 24% in a poll conducted by Insa.

The latest results indicate that the Union's support has slightly risen following the conclusion of coalition negotiations. In the previous Bundestag elections held on February 23, the Union garnered 28.5% of the votes, while the AfD received 20.8%. Despite a minor uptick for the Union, the competition remains fierce, with the AfD showing continued strength in various polls.

According to Hermann Binkert, the head of Insa, the Union's future success will depend not just on the coalition agreement but on effective governance. Recent data from Ipsos suggested a temporary lead for the AfD, which had reached 25%, while the Union fell to 24%. This reflects the dynamic nature of voter sentiment, with fluctuations in support for both parties.

The survey also revealed that the Green Party remains steady at 11%, while the Left Party has dropped to 10%. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) is currently struggling, polling at just 3%, indicating that it would not meet the required threshold to enter parliament. Additionally, 6% of respondents indicated they would support other parties not represented in the current parliament.

Current projections suggest that a coalition between the Union and the Social Democrats (SPD) would not secure a majority, as their combined support stands at 41%, falling short of the 46% needed. Potential coalition options could include a Kenya coalition involving the Union, SPD, and Greens, or a controversial alliance between the Union and the AfD, although Merz has categorically ruled out the latter.

As political dynamics evolve, these survey results highlight the ongoing competition between the major parties and the changing preferences of the electorate. The current climate suggests that coalition partners will need to navigate complex alliances and voter expectations as they prepare for the next stages of governance.
