In a candid interview, Kevin Kühnert, the former General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has opened up about the personal and professional challenges that led to his unexpected departure from politics. Known for his significant potential as a political leader, Kühnert's resignation in the autumn of 2024 raised eyebrows across the political landscape.
He has attributed his decision primarily to the increasing threats and acts of violence he faced. Kühnert described a series of alarming encounters that made him reevaluate his position. For instance, during a campaign event in Detmold, he was approached by an aggressive individual who not only verbally assaulted him but also physically attacked him by throwing an egg. Additionally, Kühnert recounted experiences of intimidation from far-right extremists and instances where he was confronted by hostile individuals in public settings, including a particularly distressing encounter with a self-identified supporter of an extremist party.
The former SPD leader expressed that these experiences were not isolated. He noted an unsettling atmosphere where public displays of hostility towards politicians have become more common, including demonstrations featuring gallows outside the SPD headquarters. Such incidents have deeply affected his sense of safety and well-being, even during personal vacations where he sought solitude in remote areas.
Kühnert conveyed a sense of futility in combating the pervasive hate that has permeated social media and public discourse. He articulated a growing sense of despair, feeling that his efforts to counter this negativity were becoming increasingly ineffective. The culmination of these experiences led him to feel that he could only find peace by retreating to isolated environments.
Despite the challenges he faced, Kühnert clarified that his withdrawal from political life was not solely motivated by fear of violence but was also influenced by a broader skepticism regarding the efficacy of political resilience in the face of such hostility. He recalled a troubling incident in a public transport setting where he overheard discussions among a group of men about physically assaulting him, a situation that went unaddressed by the other passengers.
While acknowledging that many public figures endure far greater levels of violence, Kühnert admitted that he struggled to adapt to the harsh realities of political life. He articulated a need for a culture of respect and understanding among political opponents, recalling how his personal relationships, particularly with a partner from a different political background, have emphasized the importance of recognizing the validity of differing viewpoints.
Looking towards the future, Kühnert has not entirely ruled out a return to politics. He emphasized that his departure was not a reflection of disdain for political engagement but rather a response to the current climate of hostility. He expressed a commitment to the political process and a desire to contribute positively when the environment allows.
