Escalation of Hostilities: Drone Strikes Reported in Moscow and Kyiv

Wed 7th May, 2025

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has launched drone attacks on Moscow, according to Russian officials. This development comes just days before the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, announced via Telegram that nine drones were intercepted during the night. As of now, there have been no reports of damage or casualties from these strikes.

This incident follows a series of drone attacks attributed to Ukraine earlier in the week, with Russian authorities having reported similar incidents on both Monday and Tuesday. The accuracy of these claims is challenging to verify independently.

Additionally, air traffic at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport was temporarily restricted during the night due to security concerns, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS, citing the aviation authority Rosaviatsiya.

On May 9, Russia will celebrate the Day of Victory, marking 80 years since its triumph over Nazi Germany. This year's parade in Moscow is expected to draw numerous foreign dignitaries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will arrive today for a four-day state visit. In anticipation of this significant occasion, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has ordered a three-day ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. However, Ukrainian officials view this as a potential ruse and are demanding a more substantial ceasefire of at least 30 days as a preliminary step toward a comprehensive resolution to the conflict.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen significant military engagements, with both sides accusing each other of aggression. As tensions continue to rise, the international community remains focused on potential diplomatic solutions to restore peace in the region.
