Trump Announces Layoffs Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

In response to the prolonged government shutdown, President Donald Trump has announced significant layoffs of federal employees. This declaration was made during a press briefing at the White House where he addressed assembled journalists.

Approximately 750,000 federal employees have been placed on unpaid leave due to the budget impasse. Essential services such as air traffic control, law enforcement, border security, and emergency medical services remain operational, with personnel in these areas exempt from furloughs.

Trump has consistently warned that mass layoffs could be a consequence of the shutdown, which officially began when Congress failed to agree on a temporary budget the previous week. The Democratic opposition has raised concerns that the Trump administration might exploit the shutdown to further its agenda of restructuring the federal government.

Negotiations to resolve the budget crisis remain stalled, with no discussions taking place between Republican and Democratic leaders since the shutdown commenced. The Democratic Party is adamant that they will not support the Republican budget proposal, particularly in light of proposed cuts to healthcare assistance for low-income individuals.

Jason Crow, a Democratic representative, has expressed firm opposition to financing what he calls the "lawlessness of this administration." He criticized the administration's legal actions against political opponents, the purging of military personnel, and the treatment of migrants in his district.

On Fox News, Senate Republican Leader John Thune acknowledged that budget discussions are at a standstill, resulting in the working population bearing the brunt of the consequences. However, he indicated that talks regarding the potential continuation of funding for Obamacare are still ongoing behind closed doors.

This shutdown marks the first since the lengthy impasse that occurred during the 2018-2019 fiscal year, which lasted for 35 days and was the longest in U.S. history. According to the Congressional Budget Office, that previous shutdown caused an economic impact estimated at around $11 billion.
