Ten Years After the OECD's Warning: Bias Against Boys in Schools Still Ignored

A fatal shark attack occurred off the coast of Sydney, Australia, on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a 57-year-old surfer. The incident took place around 9 a.m. local time at Long Reef, a popular surfing spot located north of Sydney. According to police reports, the man sustained severe injuries to his limbs and tragically succumbed to his injuries at the beach.
Following the attack, authorities temporarily closed all beaches from Manly to Narrabeen as a precautionary measure and initiated a search operation for the shark involved. Police utilized drones and helicopters in their efforts to locate the animal.
The specific species of shark responsible for the attack remains unidentified. However, the eastern coastline of Australia is home to several potentially dangerous shark species, including tiger sharks, bull sharks, and great white sharks. Investigators are examining the bite marks on the surfer's severely damaged surfboard to determine which type of shark was involved in the incident.
Reports indicate that the victim was an experienced surfer and family man, who had gone into the water with friends that morning. While the rest of his group was able to return to shore safely, the man's body was later found in the surf, missing several limbs.
According to police, the surfer had been in the water for approximately 30 minutes and was only about 100 meters from the shore when the attack occurred. Inspector Stuart Thomson noted that other surfers spotted him in the waves and attempted to rescue him. Unfortunately, by that time, he had likely lost a significant amount of blood, rendering resuscitation efforts unsuccessful.
Despite the presence of sharks off Sydney's coast, the likelihood of a shark attack remains very low. In the previous year, there was only one reported fatal attack, as per the Australian Shark Incident Database. So far in 2025, there have been three reported attacks, with the last fatal incident occurring in 2022 at Little Bay, a location that had not seen any fatalities for nearly six decades.
In light of the recent incident, several beaches were closed for safety reasons. Experts warn that climate change and rising sea temperatures may increase interactions between humans and sharks. As reported by researchers from James Cook University in Queensland, species such as the bull shark are now spending approximately 15 days longer off Sydney's coast during the summer compared to 15 years ago. This trend is attributed to the faster warming of Pacific waters in this region, leading sharks to frequent areas closer to shore.
