TmuxAI Launches: New AI Assistant for Terminal Multiplexer Tmux

The open-source AI assistant TmuxAI has been officially released for the Tmux terminal multiplexer. This innovative tool is designed to observe terminal content continuously, assist users upon request, and autonomously execute commands.

TmuxAI operates through two additional panes within the Tmux interface. One pane is dedicated to chat functionality, utilizing Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash language model by default. The other pane allows the assistant to run commands independently, while TmuxAI maintains read-only access to all other panes to use their content as contextual support.

In its standard monitoring mode, TmuxAI accesses terminal content along with current commands and system information, which are relayed to the language model. If the model's response includes a command, the user must approve its execution. Upon approval, TmuxAI waits for a predetermined period, set to five seconds by default, before executing the command and using the output as context for subsequent inquiries. Alternatively, there is a preparation mode where the assistant waits until a command is fully executed before proceeding.

Furthermore, TmuxAI features a monitoring mode that allows users to specify particular actions for the assistant to observe and report on. For instance, TmuxAI can analyze user inputs and suggest more efficient alternatives for similar tasks or warn users of potential security risks associated with commands. The assistant can also monitor log files, identify errors, and propose solutions.

For the integration of language models, TmuxAI employs an interface with the OpenRouter platform, which also handles billing. Users need to enter their API key in the configuration file before the initial launch. Additionally, users can replace the default Gemini model with another language model available on OpenRouter. TmuxAI also supports the OpenAI interface and compatible endpoints, such as those from Anthropic. Users have the option to override session configurations temporarily to utilize a different language model during use.

To optimize token usage and ensure cost-effective operation, TmuxAI condenses the chat history of a session. Users can set a maximum token limit in the configuration file. When the context approaches 80% of this limit, TmuxAI automatically compresses the history. Users can also trigger a manual summary while using the assistant.

All functionalities of the TmuxAI assistant can be explored on its official website. Currently, the tool is available for x64 and ARM64 systems running Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and Darwin. It also supports additional processor architectures under Linux. All packages of this application, licensed under Apache 2.0, can be downloaded from GitHub.
