Major Disruptions Ahead: Long-Term Detours for Commuters Between Dresden and Leipzig

Commuter Alert: Ongoing Construction Impacting Travel

Commuters traveling between Dresden and Leipzig are facing significant disruptions due to an extensive construction project initiated by the Deutsche Bahn. Starting from March 10, 2025, passengers using the Regional Express services, as well as those traveling on ICE trains, will need to adapt to a revised schedule as a result of construction work on the rail line.

The ongoing modernization efforts between the Zeithain and Leckwitz sections of the railway are expected to last several months, with completion anticipated by June 6, 2025. During this period, certain train services will be rerouted, particularly affecting the Regional Express RE 50 service, which will not stop at several intermediate stations.

Altered Train Services

From Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM, the RE 50 trains will be diverted, bypassing the following stations:

  • Coswig (near Dresden)
  • Weinböhla
  • Niederau
  • Priestewitz
  • Nünchritz
  • Glaubitz (near Riesa)

To assist affected travelers, a replacement bus service will be established to connect Riesa with Glaubitz, Nünchritz, and Großenhain Cottbuser Bahnhof. This service will provide connections to the RE 15, RE 18, and RB 31 train lines that travel to Dresden.

Impact on Long-Distance Services

In addition to regional services, long-distance travel will also be impacted by this construction. Most ICE trains scheduled between Leipzig and Dresden will be canceled during the same hours, while IC trains will be rerouted and operate at different times.

Travelers are advised to stay informed about potential changes to their travel plans. The Deutsche Bahn recommends checking their official website, the DB Navigator app, or the VVO online platform for real-time updates on train schedules before setting out on their journey.
