A Cambodian soldier was killed during an exchange of gunfire between military forces along the border between Thailand and Cambodia. According to a spokesperson for the Cambodian military, the incident occurred on Wednesday when Cambodian troops conducting a routine patrol were fired upon by Thai soldiers.

In response, the Thai military accused Cambodia of encroaching into disputed territory. The Thai forces stated that as their commanders approached for negotiations, the Cambodian side opened fire, reportedly due to a misunderstanding. No injuries were reported among Thai troops.

The exchange of fire lasted approximately ten minutes, after which commanders from both sides initiated discussions and agreed to a ceasefire. Thailand's Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai later confirmed that the situation had been resolved, emphasizing that neither side intended for the clash to occur.

The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has a long history, particularly concerning the area surrounding Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dates back nearly a millennium. This region has been the focal point of numerous confrontations in the past. The most notable conflict occurred in 2011, where clashes over several days resulted in multiple fatalities before a ceasefire was established. In 2013, the International Court of Justice awarded Cambodia sovereignty over the disputed territory.
