Sweden Launches 100 MW Solar Park to Full Capacity

Mon 8th Sep, 2025

Sweden has successfully connected a 100 MW solar park to the grid, marking a significant milestone in its renewable energy efforts. Following a months-long testing phase, the facility is now operating at its full capacity.

The solar park, developed by Swedish solar company Alight in collaboration with French energy provider Neoen, is located at the Hultsfred airport in the Småland region. This facility boasts 174,000 photovoltaic modules and is designed to deliver peak power of 100 MW.

Occupying approximately 130 hectares, the site is comparable in size to around 185 football fields. The photovoltaic panels are strategically installed around the airport's runway in Hultsfred, enhancing the area's sustainability.

Annual projections estimate that the solar park will generate about 100 GWh of renewable energy, which could potentially power over 18,000 average Swedish households. However, it is noteworthy that 95% of the generated energy will be utilized by the fashion retailer H&M, which has committed to purchasing the electricity. In 2022, H&M formalized a contract to ensure that by 2030, all its electricity will come from renewable sources.

The solar park was initially commissioned in April 2025, with construction completed on schedule by Equans Solar & Storage and Solkompaniet. After a period of reduced operational capacity for testing, the facility has now been authorized to operate at full output.

This solar initiative is part of Sweden's broader commitment to advancing the energy transition and generating CO2-neutral electricity. The project received financial backing from Danske Bank, which facilitated the necessary funding for its construction. The distribution of the electricity generated will be managed through the local grid operated by E.ON in Hultsfred.
