Suspected ATM Bomber Arrested After Explosives Discovery

Mon 24th Feb, 2025

Following the discovery of high-explosive materials during a police operation in Berlin, a second suspect has been taken into custody. Authorities announced that the 32-year-old man was apprehended at Berlin's Brandenburg Airport on Sunday morning, with a previously issued arrest warrant now enforced.

The suspect is believed to be associated with a 34-year-old man who tragically died in a mishap involving explosives in Niedersachsen in late November 2024. This incident occurred shortly after the older suspect evaded capture during a police check at the Neukölln S-Bahn station, where he left behind a bag containing significant quantities of explosives.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the 32-year-old was also present at the scene during the police operation but managed to escape. Following his arrest, investigators are hopeful that he will provide crucial insights regarding the source of the explosives and the intended use.

Authorities have indicated that the explosives in question are triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a substance infamously utilized in several terrorist attacks in cities like Paris and Brussels. In recent years, criminal elements have increasingly adopted TATP for ATM bombings, posing a growing threat to public safety.

The police and public prosecutor's office are keen to uncover the full extent of the suspects' plans and connections, and they remain vigilant in their efforts to dismantle any potential networks involved in similar criminal activities.
