Surge in Phishing Scams Impersonating PayPal

Fri 27th Jun, 2025

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in phishing scams where fraudsters are posing as representatives of PayPal. Victims are targeted through phone calls, with scammers claiming that substantial money transfers are pending on their accounts.

Typically, these calls are automated and delivered by a computer-generated voice. While some calls originate from blocked numbers, there have been instances where recognizable phone numbers were used. The automated voice prompts recipients to press a button to halt the supposed transfer. By doing so, individuals are connected to a live operator who attempts to extract sensitive personal information, such as bank details or email addresses, or may even initiate unauthorized money transfers.

It is essential to remain vigilant as the methods employed by these criminals can vary widely. Scammers often employ multiple tactics to deceive their targets, making it crucial for users to be cautious when receiving unexpected calls or messages.

Importantly, PayPal and other reputable companies do not engage with customers in this manner. Any such telephone calls should be treated as fraudulent attempts. It is recommended to hang up immediately and refrain from sharing any personal information. Users can verify their account status through the official PayPal app or website. Any concerns should be directed to customer service through verified channels.

The rise in these scams has been noted previously, with similar incidents reported earlier this year and again in May.

Additionally, the Consumer Protection Agency has issued warnings regarding phishing attempts targeting clients of banks, online services, and delivery companies. Scammers are actively seeking to obtain personal data and login credentials from unsuspecting individuals. For instance, in some cases, DHL clients are told that a delivery cannot be completed due to an incorrect address, while Deutsche Bahn customers are lured with promises of refunds. Scammers are also targeting subscribers of Netflix and other financial institutions, including Apo-Bank, highlighting the widespread nature of these threats.
