Storm System Detlef to Bring Wind and Rain for the Long Weekend

Fri 3rd Oct, 2025

The long weekend is set to be impacted by storm system Detlef, which is expected to bring significant rain and strong winds, particularly in coastal and mountainous regions where gusts may reach alarming levels.

After several days of pleasant autumn weather, the forecast indicates a shift as the German Unity Day approaches. While the eastern regions of Germany may still enjoy sunny conditions, the western areas will begin to see increasing cloud cover throughout the day. Minimal rain is anticipated initially, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 17 degrees Celsius.

Starting from Friday night, the influence of storm Detlef will become increasingly evident across Germany. Meteorologists predict heavy showers moving in from the northwest, which will spread towards the central regions. There are warnings for persistent rain, especially in the northwest, and strong winds are expected to accompany the rainfall. Coastal areas and high-altitude regions will experience particularly fierce conditions with the potential for severe gusts.

Saturday is forecasted to be marked by continued rain and wind. Showers will travel from the northwest to the southeast, with coastal and mountainous areas facing very strong winds, including the possibility of severe storms. The broader region will experience gusty winds, predominantly from the south to southwest. Additionally, thunderstorms could develop along the North Sea coastline by the afternoon. High temperatures will range between 11 and 18 degrees, with some areas in the southern Upper Rhine and the Alpine foreland reaching up to 20 degrees.

On Sunday, there is a chance of clearer weather in the south and southwest, allowing for some sunshine to emerge. However, the forecast still calls for fresh winds from the southwest and west, with localized gusts expected. Mountainous areas and coastal regions will continue to see potentially dangerous gusts.

As the long weekend unfolds, residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and prepare for the potential impacts of storm Detlef, which is likely to disrupt outdoor plans and travel in affected areas.
