Stephan Weil Honored in Farewell Ceremony as Niedersachsen's Minister-President

Tue 20th May, 2025

Stephan Weil, after a remarkable twelve-year tenure as the Minister-President of Niedersachsen, has been ceremonially bid farewell. The event took place at the New Town Hall, where the Hannover Army Music Corps performed a serenade that included the national anthem and the Niedersachsen song, along with three selected pieces personally chosen by Weil.

Among the musical selections was the significant labor movement anthem from 1845, 'Bürgerlied' by Adalbert Harnisch, the poignant 'Die Moorsoldaten,' which originated in Emsland and is known as a resistance song against the Nazi regime, and 'Won't Forget These Days' by the local band Fury in the Slaughterhouse. Weil expressed that the latter piece resonated with him, stating it encapsulated his feelings at the moment.

Earlier in April, Weil had announced his decision to step down, with his official resignation effective as of May 19. He cited personal reasons for his departure, particularly his advancing age, and concluded his farewell address with the same song that had been a backdrop to many of his celebrations.

In a heartfelt tribute, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius praised Weil, describing him as a dedicated advocate for the people, a skilled crisis manager, and an exemplary leader of the state. During his approximately 15-minute speech, Pistorius highlighted Weil's calm demeanor and his effective leadership throughout a dozen years marked by numerous challenges and significant events, during which he set many crucial policies for the state.

Olaf Lies, who previously served as the Economic Minister, is anticipated to succeed Weil as the next Minister-President. His ascension to this role has been widely anticipated, as he has long been considered a frontrunner for the position. The coalition government, consisting of the Social Democrats and the Greens, aims to continue its collaborative efforts, though it will move forward without the European Ministry.
