Thu 9th Oct, 2025

The region of Oberallgäu is set to host the 2027 Special Olympics Winter Games for athletes with intellectual disabilities, following the formal signing of a cooperation agreement by representatives of Sonthofen and the five Hörnerdörfer: Balderschwang, Bolsterlang, Fischen, Obermaiselstein, and Ofterschwang. The agreement, signed at the Sonthofen town hall, marks the official commencement of preparations for what is expected to be Bavaria's largest winter sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Special Olympics Winter Games are scheduled to take place from January 18 to 21, 2027, across the alpine city of Sonthofen and the surrounding villages. The event will serve as a qualification competition for the 2028 National Winter Games of Special Olympics Germany, underscoring its importance within the broader national sporting calendar.

The organizing committee anticipates participation from up to 700 athletes, supported by a total of 1,500 attendees, including coaches, families, and approximately 300 volunteers. The sporting program will feature competitions in ten disciplines recognized by Special Olympics Germany: figure skating, floorball, climbing, snowshoeing, short track speed skating, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice stock sport, and dance.

Local officials emphasized the significance of bringing the Special Olympics to the Oberallgäu region, highlighting both the area's established winter sports infrastructure and its commitment to fostering inclusion. The collaboration between Sonthofen and the five Hörnerdörfer is intended to ensure a well-organized event that maximizes opportunities for participation and engagement within the local community.

Organizers aim to create an inclusive and vibrant atmosphere throughout the games, with a diverse supporting program planned alongside the sports competitions. The opening ceremony will feature the ceremonial lighting of the Flame of Hope, symbolizing the spirit of the Special Olympics movement.

This initiative follows the official handover of the Special Olympics Bayern flag to Sonthofen and its partner villages in July, an event that marked the beginning of the region's journey as the host of the 2027 Games. The local organizing committee is expected to convene soon to finalize details surrounding sports venues and the broader event concept, ensuring that all preparations align with the requirements of athletes and visitors alike.

By hosting the Special Olympics Winter Games, Oberallgäu seeks to advance awareness and opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities, promoting both athletic achievement and social inclusion. The event is also anticipated to attract a significant number of visitors to the region, further raising the profile of Sonthofen and the Hörnerdörfer as destinations for inclusive sporting events.

The 2027 Special Olympics Winter Games represent a collaborative effort by regional authorities, community organizations, and Special Olympics Bayern, all working together to deliver a memorable and impactful event that extends beyond the competition itself and fosters a culture of acceptance for all participants.
