SPD Selects Steffen Krach as Top Candidate for Upcoming Berlin Election

Wed 27th Aug, 2025

The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Berlin has officially nominated Steffen Krach as their leading candidate for the upcoming election to the Abgeordnetenhaus, scheduled for September 2026. This decision marks a significant step for the party as they aim to reclaim the Red City Hall.

Steffen Krach, currently serving as the Regions President in his hometown of Hannover, received unanimous support from the party's executive committee. At 46 years of age, Krach has a strong background in public service, having previously held the position of Secretary of State for Science and Research under the former Mayor Michael Müller.

His tenure in Berlin was marked by a focus on scientific advancement, where he became a prominent figure in the government. Krach's reputation as a pragmatic leader with a strong desire to effect change has made him a valuable asset to the SPD.

There has been considerable anticipation surrounding Krach's return to Berlin, especially since many within the party had expressed regret over his move to Hannover. His connections within the federal SPD are robust, having established a collaborative relationship with key party figures such as Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil and General Secretary Matthias Miersch, both of whom share a background from Niedersachsen.

In Hannover, Krach has demonstrated his ability to forge alliances within the community rapidly. His proactive nature and engagement have earned him respect, although some critics argue that his leadership style can sometimes lead to hasty decisions. Nevertheless, the head of the Hannover SPD, Bundestag member Adis Ahmetovic, has praised Krach as one of the party's most capable politicians, noting that he has fulfilled his campaign promises effectively.

As the Berlin SPD prepares for the upcoming election, internal dynamics are shifting. Former Mayor Franziska Giffey, who currently serves as the Senator for Economic Affairs, is not expected to run again after losing the mayoralty in a repeat election held in spring 2023. Her decline in party support has opened the door for new leadership, with Krach stepping into a prominent role.

As the SPD gears up for the electoral battle ahead, Krach's nomination is seen as a strategic move to unify the party and position them favorably against upcoming challenges.
