SPD Leader Calls for Improved Collaboration with Union

Wed 13th Aug, 2025

In light of persistent disputes among government parties, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Bärbel Bas, has advocated for enhanced cooperation with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU). Bas emphasized that citizens expect a more constructive approach as the coalition navigates its governance responsibilities.

Following the first 100 days of the current government, Bas has called for a formal agreement that outlines the future working relationship within the coalition. She stated that clarity is essential, noting, "People expect us to work together effectively and to advance the country." As the current Minister of Labor, Bas is keen on ensuring that cooperation is prioritized.

Recent surveys indicate a worrying trend regarding public confidence in the coalition. According to a Forsa poll, only 52% of respondents believe that the coalition, comprising the CDU/CSU and SPD, will remain intact until the end of the legislative period in spring 2029. Conversely, 43% anticipate a potential breakdown of the coalition before that time. This decline in trust is notable, especially when compared to the confidence levels in the previous coalition government, which stood at 60% in September 2024.

Bas is aiming to address these issues in the upcoming coalition meeting scheduled for September. She remarked that there is a prevailing perception of ongoing conflicts, which necessitates a comprehensive agreement post-summer break to foster a collaborative atmosphere within the coalition.

Additionally, on Tuesday evening, Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened a crisis meeting with senior CDU officials to discuss the current state of the coalition and its collaboration with the SPD. Internal tensions within the Union have been exacerbated in recent weeks, particularly concerning several contentious issues, including the reduction of arms exports to Israel, the unfulfilled promise to lower the electricity tax for citizens, and the appointment of judge Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf.
