Jens Spahn Addresses Participation in Thiel-Linked Dialogue Network

Fri 26th Jun, 2026

Jens Spahn, leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has publicly addressed his involvement in several events organized by the Dialogue network, an initiative originally co-founded by US entrepreneur Peter Thiel. Spahn emphasized the value of engaging with individuals and groups holding differing opinions, highlighting the importance of open discourse in political and societal contexts.

According to statements from the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Spahn participated in Dialogue network meetings held in various countries, including Ireland in 2018, Italy in 2019, Portugal in 2022, Spain in 2023, and Germany in 2024. Though invited to an upcoming meeting in Ireland in August 2026, Spahn has declined attendance. The parliamentary group clarified that Peter Thiel has not attended these events for several years, and Spahn did not encounter Thiel during any of these meetings.

The Dialogue network, which was co-established by Thiel in 2006, has come under scrutiny following the release of participant information through a recent data leak, as reported by the US magazine 'Wired.' The leaked data revealed that attendees at these events included representatives from international governments, US officials, and leaders from the technology sector. Jens Spahn's first two participations in these meetings coincided with his tenure as Federal Minister of Health.

In related remarks, Spahn referenced his recent participation in a party dialogue between the CDU and the Communist Party of China, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining communication channels with significant global actors, regardless of ideological differences. He underscored that dialogue with diverse international partners is an established practice within German political circles, and does not imply agreement with all viewpoints represented.

Peter Thiel, known for his investments in technology firms such as Palantir and for his political positions, has attracted attention in Germany and abroad for his libertarian and right-leaning stances, as well as his association with former US President Donald Trump. Thiel's perspectives have sparked debates within Germany, particularly concerning the use of Palantir's data analytics products by national security agencies.

The public discussion surrounding Spahn's involvement with the Dialogue network reflects broader concerns in German politics regarding transparency, the influence of international tech entrepreneurs, and the intersection of technology, politics, and security policy. The Dialogue events themselves are described as forums for exchanging ideas among policymakers and industry leaders from various backgrounds.

Within the CDU party, participation in external networks and dialogues is defended as a means of gathering diverse perspectives and ensuring informed policy-making. Spahn and party representatives have reiterated their position that critical engagement and debate with different viewpoints are essential for effective governance, provided that such interactions remain transparent and aligned with democratic values.

As scrutiny over international political networks continues, questions persist in Germany about the appropriate boundaries for political engagement with private sector actors and foreign stakeholders. The debate is set against a backdrop of heightened concerns about data privacy, digital sovereignty, and the potential implications of relying on foreign-developed technology tools for public sector and security operations.

Discussion over the Dialogue network is likely to remain prominent as German lawmakers and the public examine the nature of international forums and the role such gatherings play in shaping policy, particularly amid evolving challenges in security and technology.
