Sony Eases PSN Account Requirements for Select PC Games
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change regarding the online account requirements for several of its popular single-player titles on PC. In a recent update, the company revealed that players will no longer need a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to access certain games, including the highly anticipated Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
This decision affects four major titles from Sony's lineup, which represent a substantial portion of the company's blockbuster offerings. Alongside Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the upcoming The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, set for release on PC in April, will also be playable without a PSN account. Furthermore, the obligation for a PSN account has been lifted for previously released PC titles such as God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
While Sony has removed the account requirement, it is encouraging players to log into their PSN accounts through the offer of digital bonuses. These incentives typically include additional costumes and experience boosts that can enrich the gaming experience but can only be accessed once players log in to their accounts.
Previously, Sony's mandate that PC players register for a PSN account was met with criticism, particularly regarding its impact on multiplayer experiences. The company faced backlash over the account requirement for the multiplayer shooter Helldivers 2, especially in regions where PSN services were not available, which forced Sony to withdraw the game from those markets.
Many players expressed frustration over the necessity of creating and managing an additional account, leading to a wave of negative reviews for several of Sony's PC game ports. The recent announcement marks a shift in the company's approach, particularly for single-player experiences, although Sony's communication did not address the previous controversies directly.
Historically, Sony has taken its time to release its single-player games on PC, often waiting about two years after the console launch. However, the upcoming Spider-Man 2 is set to release just 15 months after its debut on consoles, indicating a potential shift in the company's strategy regarding PC gaming.
