The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Selenskyj, has described his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Rome as positive and significant. The two leaders met unexpectedly during the memorial service for Pope Francis, marking their first face-to-face encounter since a public dispute earlier this year.

In a statement published on social media, Selenskyj expressed hope for fruitful outcomes from their discussions, which centered on key issues such as civilian safety, a total and unconditional ceasefire, and establishing a long-lasting peace that would prevent future conflicts. He characterized the meeting as a highly symbolic event that could be seen as historic if they achieve mutual agreements.

Photos released by Selenskyj's office showcased the two presidents engaged in a 15-minute conversation, devoid of advisors, in a marble hall. The meeting also included British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who later commented on the positive nature of the discussions.

Trump, through his social media platform Truth Social, indicated that significant progress had been made towards ending the war in Ukraine, suggesting that both sides should convene at the highest levels to finalize agreements.

Furthermore, recent reports indicate that Russia has acknowledged deploying North Korean soldiers to aid in the recovery of the Kursk region, a move that Selenskyj has previously criticized. This admission by Russian officials is seen as a violation of international law, yet it was defended as consistent with the strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea.

Russian military leaders have claimed that they have fully regained control of the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces, a statement that has been contested by Ukrainian military sources, asserting that they still hold parts of the territory.

In related developments, the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier offered a cautious perspective regarding the diplomatic discussions occurring at the memorial service, advising against high expectations from what he termed 'funeral diplomacy.' He acknowledged that such events often allow for brief exchanges but cautioned against assuming significant policy advancements could emerge from them.

The backdrop of these diplomatic engagements comes amid ongoing military tensions, with Ukraine experiencing continued drone attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. The situation remains precarious as both sides navigate the complexities of a protracted conflict.

As the international community observes these developments, the hope for a resolution to the conflict remains a pressing issue, with leaders calling for significant diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the region.
