Six Big Cats Seized in Saxony Following Animal Welfare Raid

A major operation took place in the Schkeuditz district of Dölzig, Saxony, as authorities intervened to confiscate six big cats from a privately-owned enclosure. The coordinated action involved local police, regulatory officials, and veterinarians, who arrived early in the morning at an industrial area near Leipzig to secure the animals.

The big cats, belonging to a circus trainer, were examined and sedated using blowpipes before being transferred into specialized animal transport crates. According to information from the Nordsachsen district office, the animals were handed over to Animal Advocacy and Protection (AAP), an animal welfare organization. Under veterinary supervision, the animals are scheduled to be relocated to a sanctuary in Spain, where their living conditions are expected to be improved.

The intervention follows a long-standing dispute between the animal owner and local authorities regarding the adequacy of the holding conditions. The trainer, who previously worked in the circus industry, had housed the tigers in makeshift enclosures within the grounds of an industrial site after demand for circus performances with wild animals declined. Officials reported that the enclosures were significantly smaller than current regulations require.

Current animal welfare guidelines stipulate that the facilities used were only suitable for two tigers. However, at the time of the intervention, eight big cats were being kept on the premises. Authorities had previously issued a formal order in April, requesting that the owner upgrade the facilities to meet legal requirements. The deadline for compliance expired at the end of June, and no improvements were made. This failure to act prompted the authorities to proceed with the seizure of the animals.

In addition to concerns about enclosure size, the trainer reportedly contravened other regulations by organizing commercial events and interactive sessions with the animals, actions not permitted under the existing license. These violations had been the subject of legal proceedings in the previous year.

Earlier incidents intensified scrutiny on the facility. In May, one of the tigers escaped from the enclosure, resulting in serious injury to a 73-year-old assistant. The animal fled toward a nearby garden allotment, leading to a security incident that concluded with the police fatally shooting the tiger. The public prosecutor's office is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape and its aftermath.

Transport vehicles with Spanish license plates were observed at the scene as the animals were prepared for transfer. The authorities emphasized that the primary aim of the operation was to safeguard the welfare of the animals and to ensure that they are cared for in accordance with recognized standards for exotic wildlife.

The seizure marks the latest development in the ongoing debate over the keeping of wild animals in private and circus settings in Germany. Officials have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing animal protection regulations and to taking action when compliance is not achieved by owners.
