Sarah Wedl-Wilson Appointed as Berlin's New Culture Senator

Mon 5th May, 2025

Sarah Wedl-Wilson has been appointed as the new Culture Senator of Berlin, succeeding Joe Chialo. This announcement was made by the city's governing mayor, Kai Wegner. Wedl-Wilson, who previously served as the State Secretary for Culture, has been recognized for her understanding of the cultural sector's challenges, which the mayor highlighted as essential for maintaining the quality of Berlin's cultural institutions.

Chialo, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), announced his resignation last Friday, attributing his decision to significant budget cuts affecting the cultural sector. He indicated that the 130 million euros in reductions he had previously accepted caused severe disruptions to existing plans and objectives, raising concerns about the potential closure of well-known cultural establishments across Germany.

The relationship between Chialo and the Berlin cultural community had already been strained before his resignation, as he faced criticism for not advocating strongly enough for cultural interests during budget negotiations.

Wedl-Wilson brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously held several prominent positions in the arts, including a notable tenure as the rector of the University of Music Hanns Eisler in Berlin. She has also served as vice-rector and interim rector at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and was chair of the board for the Salzburg Easter Festival until 2023.

This leadership transition marks a significant moment for Berlin's cultural landscape, as stakeholders and institutions look to Wedl-Wilson to navigate through the current financial challenges and to foster a supportive environment for the arts.
