Off-Piste Adventure: Brothers Survived Two Avalanches Thanks to Safety Gear

Two brothers from the Munich area faced a harrowing experience while skiing off-piste in Austria, becoming victims of two separate avalanches during their descent. The incident occurred as they attempted to navigate a steep gully on the Pitztal Glacier. Although one brother sustained serious injuries, the other emerged unscathed, thanks to their effective safety equipment.

The younger brother, 45 years old, was the first to trigger an avalanche, which swept him 500 meters down the slope. Fortunately, he was equipped with a lawine airbag, an essential piece of safety gear designed to keep skiers on the surface of snow during such emergencies. This gear proved crucial, allowing him to remain above the snow and facilitating his brother's rescue.

The older brother, aged 51, declined a ride on the emergency helicopter that had been dispatched for the injured sibling. Instead, he chose to continue skiing alone. Shortly after, he inadvertently triggered another avalanche, which carried him 300 meters. In a fortunate turn of events, he also managed to stay on the surface due to his lawine airbag, ultimately skiing down to safety without injuries.
