Russian Forces Capture Four Villages in Sumy Region, Ukraine Reports

Tue 27th May, 2025

In a recent escalation of conflict, Russian troops have reportedly taken control of four evacuated villages in the Sumy region of Ukraine. Oleh Grigorow, the governor of Sumy, announced this development on social media, stating that the advancing Russian forces aim to establish a so-called buffer zone. He emphasized that Ukrainian military units are maintaining control of the situation through targeted strikes. Meanwhile, fighting continues around other villages in the region.

On the night leading into Tuesday, air alarms were sounded across eastern and southern Ukraine following a record number of drone attacks by Russian forces. The Ukrainian Air Force issued warnings via Telegram about potential strikes in the Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv regions, and over the Black Sea towards the port city of Odessa. Reports indicated that drones, particularly of the Shahed model, were deployed in these attacks. Residents in Sumy, which is near the Russian border, reported explosions, although the intensity of these attacks compared to previous nights remains unclear. Over the weekend and the night prior, Russia had launched a significant barrage of drones and cruise missiles, marking the highest level of assaults since the invasion began in February 2022.

In a related development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued threats to Western companies remaining in Russia, accusing them of undermining Russian interests. During a meeting with entrepreneurs, he responded to a business leader's call to limit the activities of U.S. tech firms Zoom and Microsoft, which have significantly reduced their operations in Russia since the military offensive against Ukraine commenced in 2022. Putin claimed that while Russia has not expelled any companies, they must respond to actions that threaten its economic stability.

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has firmly rejected Russian criticism regarding the lifting of restrictions on the range of German weapons supplied to Ukraine. He stated that there have been multiple opportunities for negotiations that President Putin has declined. Wadephul reiterated Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression and highlighted ongoing discussions about sanctions within the European framework.

Nordic leaders have raised concerns over the persistent threats posed by Russia. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen remarked that the recent attacks underscore Russia's lack of interest in achieving peace. She called for increased support for Ukraine, a sentiment echoed by her Finnish counterpart, Petteri Orpo, who described Russia as a long-term danger not only militarily but also through cyber threats.

In a related note, the last batch of Dutch F-16 fighter jets destined for Ukraine has reportedly left the Netherlands. These aircraft are crucial for enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities amid ongoing Russian air assaults. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans acknowledged the significance of these fighters in the current conflict, stating that their deployment is essential for the safety of European partners.

In light of the escalating conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to visit Germany on Wednesday. This visit comes as discussions continue regarding potential steps towards further technical negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.
