Russian Ambassador to Attend Commemoration Event Amid Controversy

Thu 24th Apr, 2025

The participation of the Russian Ambassador, Sergej Netschajew, in a World War II commemoration at the Seelower Heights has sparked considerable debate. This controversy comes as he is set to attend another memorial event in Torgau, Saxony, on April 25, 2025, which marks 80 years since American and Soviet soldiers met at the Elbe River.

According to a spokesperson from the Russian Embassy in Berlin, the ambassador will honor the invitation from the city of Torgau and participate in the planned ceremonies. The event will also feature the presence of Michael Kretschmer, the Minister President of Saxony. However, the United States will not be represented by an official at this year's ceremony, as the US Consulate in Leipzig has stated it cannot attend.

The city of Torgau clarified that no formal invitations were issued to embassies, but numerous foreign missions, including the Russian one, were notified in February about the upcoming public event. Torgau's Mayor, Henrik Simon, confirmed that the Russian representation had expressed interest in speaking at the event, which was declined to avoid granting a platform for political statements. Instead, speakers will include a representative from the Evangelical Church and the Managing Director of the Saxon Memorials Foundation, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.

Controversy arose last week when Netschajew's participation in a commemorative event at the Seelower Heights, a site of significant battle during World War II, was met with criticism. The Foreign Office had advised against allowing Russian officials at such memorial events, citing concerns that Russia might misuse these occasions to link them to its ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

Julia Klöckner, the President of the Bundestag, has excluded the ambassadors of Russia and Belarus from the central commemorative event on May 8 in the parliament, where the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is scheduled to speak.

Torgau holds annual observances to commemorate the meeting of American and Soviet forces at the Elbe Bridge, an iconic moment symbolizing the end of World War II and the liberation from Nazi oppression. This year, the observance is even more poignant as it marks the 80th anniversary of the event. In previous commemorations, such as the 75th anniversary in 2020, both Russian President Vladimir Putin and then-U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged the significance of the Elbe Day in a joint statement.

However, in 2022, the commemoration was abruptly canceled following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as the city deemed it inappropriate to hold such an event amidst the ongoing conflict.
