Jakarta - In a significant move towards strengthening defense ties, Russia and Indonesia engaged in discussions focused on enhancing military and security collaboration. This development comes as Sergei Shoigu, the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, embarks on a five-day tour of Asia, with Indonesia being his initial stop.

During his visit, Shoigu is set to meet with Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin to explore avenues for deepening their defense partnership. According to statements from the Russian government, the agenda will also include dialogue on various areas of mutual interest.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation and the largest economy in Southeast Asia, was recently admitted as a full member of the BRICS bloc, which includes Russia among its founding members. Following his discussions with Sjamsoeddin, Shoigu plans to confer with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto before proceeding to Malaysia.

Indonesian officials have indicated a desire to exchange views on both international and regional issues during Shoigu's visit. Russia aims to bolster its military relationships with Southeast Asian nations, while President Subianto has prioritized enhancing Indonesia's military capabilities. This includes plans to procure submarines, frigates, and fighter jets, as well as to expand defense cooperation with other countries. In August of the previous year, Subianto met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin as part of his efforts to strengthen military ties.

In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Indonesia has attempted to maintain a neutral stance. The former president, Joko Widodo, was the first Asian leader to visit both Moscow and Kyiv in July 2022, aiming to negotiate a ceasefire. Current discussions are expected to reflect Indonesia's ongoing commitment to a balanced foreign policy while enhancing its defense capabilities.
