The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called an urgent session of its Board of Governors following recent military actions by the United States and Israel targeting sites within Iran. This emergency meeting, requested by Russia, is set to address potential nuclear security concerns emerging from the escalation of conflict in the region.
According to official IAEA communications, the extraordinary session will focus on matters directly related to the recent military operations on Iranian territory. The meeting is scheduled to precede the agency's regularly planned gathering of representatives from its 35 member states. The IAEA indicated that the session will be held behind closed doors, with an initial statement to be delivered by Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and released to the public afterward.
Both Russia and Iran have called for the urgent assembly, highlighting the heightened sensitivity surrounding nuclear safety and security in the wake of the attacks. Iran, in particular, has cited concerns over the impact of external aggression on its nuclear infrastructure and has insisted that its peaceful nuclear program be protected from external threats and unwarranted allegations. The IAEA, however, formally acknowledged only Russia as the official requester for the session.
In a public update, the IAEA confirmed that, as of now, there is no evidence of radioactive contamination or incidents in the affected areas. Nevertheless, the agency emphasized its ongoing surveillance and communication with countries in the region, reiterating its call for restraint from all parties to prevent the emergence of nuclear safety risks to the local and wider population.
The recent developments have intensified global scrutiny of Iran's nuclear program. Western nations, including the United States and Israel, have long accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has consistently denied these accusations, affirming its right to use nuclear technology for civilian purposes only. The IAEA, according to a confidential report reviewed by international media, has underscored the critical need for comprehensive inspections of Iran's nuclear materials and capabilities, particularly given the current volatile climate.
The agency's next steps are expected to include technical discussions with Iranian authorities, building on previous negotiations held in Geneva with U.S. representatives. However, Iranian officials have not confirmed whether these discussions will proceed as scheduled in light of the recent escalation.
The IAEA's scheduled emergency meeting is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. Central European Time, immediately preceding the standard session of agency representatives. The outcome of this high-level assembly is anticipated to influence both international diplomatic efforts and future monitoring of Iran's nuclear activities.
As the situation develops, global powers and neighboring states are closely monitoring for any signs of increased nuclear risk, while the IAEA remains committed to upholding its mandate of ensuring nuclear safety and non-proliferation in the region.
