Former BSW Leader Robert Crumbach Returns to SPD in Brandenburg

Tue 10th Mar, 2026

Robert Crumbach, Brandenburg's Finance Minister and former state chair of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), has rejoined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) after a period of political realignment. Crumbach, who had previously been a member of the SPD for around four decades, played a significant role in the formation of the BSW in Brandenburg before ultimately deciding to return to his original party.

Crumbach's decision to re-enter the SPD follows a tumultuous period marked by internal disputes and shifting alliances within Brandenburg's political landscape. After leaving the SPD in early 2024 to help establish the BSW in the region, Crumbach was elected as the BSW's state chair and later led its parliamentary group. However, his tenure in the BSW was short-lived due to escalating disagreements within the party and its leadership.

During his time with the BSW, Crumbach was appointed as Brandenburg's Finance Minister, a move that led to further tensions within the party. His support for legislative measures such as the broadcasting reform added to the friction among BSW members, resulting in mounting pressure on his position. These internal conflicts ultimately led to his departure from both the BSW party and its parliamentary group.

The political crisis intensified when several BSW representatives left the party in late 2025, significantly weakening the parliamentary group. Although some members briefly returned, the instability persisted, culminating in the collapse of the SPD/BSW coalition in the Brandenburg state parliament. In the aftermath, Crumbach and another former BSW member, Jouleen Gruhn, joined the SPD parliamentary group as independent members, providing SPD and CDU with a narrow majority.

With the formation of a new coalition between the SPD and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) underway, Crumbach is expected to assume the role of Infrastructure Minister in the upcoming cabinet. His return to the SPD marks a notable shift in Brandenburg's political dynamics, reinforcing the SPD's position within the regional government.

The BSW parliamentary group has responded critically to Crumbach's re-entry into the SPD, alleging that he orchestrated the coalition's demise to facilitate a change in government composition. BSW representatives have questioned his motives and suggested that his involvement in the party was part of a larger strategy to weaken it from within. Despite these accusations, Crumbach has emphasized his longstanding commitment to representing the interests of working people, reiterating his belief that the SPD remains the most credible advocate for these values.

The developments surrounding Crumbach's political trajectory underscore the evolving nature of party alliances in Brandenburg, as well as the challenges faced by newly formed political movements like the BSW. As the SPD and CDU move forward with their coalition plans, Crumbach's experience and influence are likely to play a significant role in shaping the future direction of Brandenburg's government.
