Rising Antisemitism Threatens Jewish Life in Berlin

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

In Berlin, the alarming trend of antisemitic incidents has become a pressing concern, particularly following the Hamas attack on Israel two years ago. This increase in hostility has manifested in a rise in verbal assaults, threats, and physical attacks against the Jewish community, fundamentally altering their daily lives.

According to the Research and Information Center for Antisemitism in Berlin (RIAS), the number of antisemitic incidents has not only surged but has also stabilized at a concerningly high level. RIAS project leader Julia Kopp noted that the events of October 7, which marked a significant escalation of violence, led to an exponential increase in reported incidents. Prior to this date, the average was approximately 53 antisemitic incidents per month, which skyrocketed to 263 thereafter. In comparison, the previous year averaged around 200 incidents.

Antisemitic incidents encompass a wide range of behaviors, from online abuse to overt violence. Kopp highlighted that while there has been a notable increase in physical attacks compared to prior years, the online hate speech remains prevalent and alarming. For instance, RIAS documented 55 physical attacks in the last year alone, compared to lower figures from previous years.

The environment of fear has led many in the Jewish community to reconsider how they express their identities in public. Choices such as wearing a Star of David or a kippah are now weighed against potential risks. Kopp emphasized that the tension between visibility and safety has intensified, causing many to feel less inclined to showcase their heritage openly.

Despite the historical context of antisemitism in Berlin, the recent escalation has left a lasting impact on the Jewish community. Incidents of graffiti, verbal harassment, and even more severe forms of discrimination have become commonplace. For many, the fear of being targeted due to their identity is now a daily reality.

The attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in the tragic loss of around 1,200 lives in Israel and the abduction of over 250 individuals to Gaza. In response to these events, Israel has conducted military operations in Gaza, leading to significant casualties among Palestinians, including women and children.

As antisemitism continues to rise, the Jewish community in Berlin faces a complex and challenging landscape. The struggle for acceptance and safety amid increasing hostility remains a critical issue that requires urgent attention and action.
