Major Cocaine Shipment Worth EUR812 Million Intercepted Near Canary Islands

Spanish authorities have successfully intercepted a cargo vessel carrying a record-breaking 30 tonnes of cocaine off the coast of the Canary Islands, marking one of the largest narcotics seizures in European history. The operation was executed by the Guardia Civil, who boarded the vessel, identified as the 'Arconian', and escorted it to the port of Las Palmas on Gran Canaria.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officials discovered over 1,000 individually numbered packages containing cocaine, as well as a cache of firearms and ammunition. The estimated street value of the seized drugs exceeds EUR812 million, though actual market returns could be significantly higher.

According to investigators, the 'Arconian', which sailed under the flag of the Comoros Islands, was officially en route from Sierra Leone to Libya. However, authorities suspect the declared route was a cover for illicit activities. The vessel, approximately 90 meters in length, is believed to have been transporting cocaine sourced from South America, with the intention of transferring the cargo to smaller speedboats at sea for distribution across European markets.

During the operation, six out of the 23 crew members attempted to evade capture by hiding on board. All crew members, whose nationalities include Dutch, Surinamese, and Filipino, were eventually detained and are now in custody. In addition to the drugs, officers confiscated several firearms and ammunition, underscoring the potentially violent nature of the smuggling operation.

The investigation was a coordinated effort involving not only Spanish law enforcement but also the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Dutch police. Their joint efforts highlight the transnational scope of drug trafficking networks and the need for international cooperation to combat organized crime.

This seizure surpasses previous European records, most notably the 25-tonne cocaine discovery in Hamburg, Germany, in July 2024, where the narcotics were hidden in containers among fruit shipments from South America.

Despite this significant blow to international drug cartels, experts caution that maritime drug smuggling remains a persistent challenge for authorities. It is estimated that thousands of tonnes of illegal substances are transported undetected across global shipping routes each year. Law enforcement agencies continue to enhance surveillance and intelligence-sharing activities in an effort to disrupt these operations and prevent illicit drugs from reaching European shores.

The successful interception of the 'Arconian' demonstrates the ongoing commitment of European authorities to tackling organized crime and drug trafficking. The scale of this operation serves as a reminder of both the magnitude of the drug trade and the critical need for vigilance and collaboration among international partners.
